The Obama administration is out to prove that government stimulus fails every time it’s tried. Of course, they don’t know that’s what they’re doing. They’re either naive enough to think stimulus can work, or they have ulterior motives.

In the case of the $787 Billion “stimulus” bill, passed in the first months of Obama’s term in office, I think it was ulterior motives. Most of the money isn’t slated to be spent until 2010. That’s because 2010 is an election year, and democrats want to buy votes. If they really believed it would stimulate the economy, it would be spent in as soon as possible.

Cash for clunkers on the other hand is a case of naivete. I think the democrats actually believed that it would help turn the ailing automotive industry around, but as this story illustrates, any stimulating effect is temporary and once you remove the “stimulus”, sales slump again.

That’s because the cash for clunkers program isn’t stimulus, but a simple propping up of a failed business model. Think about it – how many Americans need to buy a new car every 3 years? How any Americans can actually afford to do so?

Stimulus programs fail because they seek to artificially prop up underlying problems that lead to the economic downturn. It’s untenable and any attempt at stimulus is simply delaying the eventual day of reckoning.
